The Homeless Hero

Cover to The Homeless Hero by James T KellyThey called him Pinnacle. It was a good name. But not for the reasons you’re thinking.

When I first met him, I thought as you did. He flew out of the sky, dropping to the rooftop with an impressive thump. That thump told you a lot. It wasn’t a thunderclap or a destructive boom like the cartoons would depict. But it was still there, telling you something important had arrived but that it wasn’t going to show off about it. And then he straightened up and gave me an easy smile. An open smile. This was a man who was enjoying himself.

I think of that smile and my heart aches.

Pinnacle is strong, he’s fast and he can fly. He wants to follow in his father’s footsteps and dedicate himself to saving others. He’s a real-life superhero.

But he gives too much. He can’t draw a line between his heroics and his own life. So when he meets a girl, she tells him to be selfish and look after himself. But how can he do that when everyone needs saving?

I’ve read comics for many years and I’ve always wondered: how does a superhero have a life of his own if he can always hear cries for help? How does he have a job, a social life, even a family? How can he make time for herself? This short story is the result of those wonderings.
